Application Process
Candidates for admission to the St. Vincent Charity Hospital/Saint Luke's Medical Center's residency program must have one of the following qualifications to be eligible for appointment to the accredited residency program:
- Graduate from a medical school in the United States or Canada accredited by the LCME (Liaison Committee on Medical Education).
- Graduate from a college of osteopathic medicine in the United States accredited by the AOA (American Osteopathic Association).
- Graduates from one of the schools outside of the United States or Canada must meet one of the following qualifications:
- Have a current, valid certificate from the ECFMG (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates). For more information on ECFMG certification, please write:

- Hold a State Medical Board of Ohio Training Certificate to practice medicine during residency training.
ERAS
St. Vincent Charity Hospital/Saint Luke's Medical Center participates in the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS), developed by the American Association of Medical Colleges.
If you are a U.S. medical student or a graduate of a U.S. medical school, please contact the Dean's Office at your school for application information.
If you are an International Medical Graduate, please contact the ECFMG at the above address. They will provide you with the materials needed to apply. Please note we will ONLY accept ERAS applications that are ELECTRONICALLY TRANSMITTED to our institution. Please do not send any materials via mail, fax or email. Those materials received outside of the ERAS system will not be forwarded to the program. No other applications will be accepted.
International Medical Graduates:
Following are the guidelines used by the Internal Medicine Residency Selection Committee to identify applicants to be interviewed and possibly considered for final rank list or appointment:
- Graduate of accredited/approved medical school
- Must be ECFMG certified for interview consideration
- U.S.M.L.E. Scores for Part 1 & 2 must be 210 (85) or above, preferably on the first attempt
- Pass all Qualifying Examinations, including USMLE Part 3, if applying for an H1B Visa
- Must have cleared all qualifying exams by December 31 (of the application year) if requesting an H1B Visa. This includes USMLE Parts 1, 2 and 3 and the CSA examination
- Must be able to come to Cleveland to interview
- Must be prepared to do 3 years residency training in Internal Medicine
- Must be able to begin training by the start date on appointment letter
- All appointees must report for June Orientation
Answers to Frequently Asked Questions:
The deadline for the receipt of completed applications is December 1 (of the application year). Only applications submitted through ERAS will be reviewed and considered.
- St. Vincent Charity Hospital does assist in obtaining both J1 and H1B Visas. If one plans to obtain an H1B Visa, one must have received notification of passing Step 3 by December 31 (of the application year).
- Three (3) Letters of Recommendation are required.
- U.S. experience is preferred, but not required.
- There is no specific limit to the years since medical school graduation.

- Three (3) letters of recommendation from physicians who have supervised you in a clinical setting
International Medical Graduates:
Certified copy of your current ECFMG certificate and qualifying exam results.
